Neupos: Magic final.

This memory is of high school, Aiya standing opposite another classmate- Liza, she recalls. Both of them wear the same simple robe, each of them holds an identical staff, and the difference between them... As far as Aiya can tell, the main difference is that Liza is showing no outward signs of nervousness.

This is the final for her class on magic, a practical exam with students pit against each other. The teacher, an elven woman called Ms. Vira, watches over them with a stern look, going over the rules one more time: Students will use only abilities from the Mage class to fight each other. Whoever drops below half HP first will be considered the loser. The grade will be decided by how one fights, with better performance making a higher grade- even a loss can gain a good grade if the loser fights well enough.

Finally, Ms. Vira waves her hand, signaling the start of the fight, and steps back, at the same time using M-Shield on herself to block stray magic.

As soon as her hand drops, Aiya and Liza both begin casting their spells at once. Liza's brown eyes begin to glow- Scan or Scan 2? She isn't sure, but it doesn't matter, as Aiya's first spell is Sleep. Liza seems to try to resist, but she slumps over almost immediately, which gives Aiya ample time of her own to Scan Liza herself.

Her level is 17- Below Aiya's own. At that level, Liza could only have Scan, not Scan 2, so she would only see Aiya's stats, not what spells she knows. This is a small comfort, though Liza would know most of that anyway from simple knowing Aiya's level. Aiya barely hesitates before going into her next spell- Ice 2. Great chunks of ice materialize around Liza from all sides and pelt her, then continue to cling as the shock and damage wake her- Even once she is awake, the cold ice clings to her and makes it harder for her to move and slowing down her casting.

Liza immediately attempts to counter this with large spells, but Aiya doesn't falter. Both of them immediately cast Fire 2 at each other, and though Aiya feels the burn badly- And damn does it hurt- her spell went off first. Seeing victory, she casts Fire 2 once more, and then immediately follows it up with a quick Lightning. With that, Ms. Vira puts a wall of magic between them to stop the fight, and turns to them.

"The fight is Aiya's." She says simply, looking between them. "However, a mage must be calm and make rational decisions at all times, and many odd decisions were made in this battle."

"For example, the opening move. Scan is the traditional choice that I teach my students to begin with. Mages can maximize damage more easily by looking at the opponent's weaknesses and resistances. I have taught you this, have I not? Yet knowing this, you instead opened with Sleep, which is one of the most commonly-resisted status effects."

Aiya nods, trying to keep her appearance calm, though she has twisting nervous feelings in her gut. "I thought that the traditional Scan was an opportunity." She says clearly. "If both of us Scan each other at the same time, neither side has an advantage. And I thought, since this battle is to display all of our skills, there was no way our provided equipment would have anything to block statuses. Therefore, rather than a straight fight of attempting to maximize damage, I used Sleep to gain time to scan her and check her level, then used the knowledge this gave me of her spell list to strategize. Finally, using Ice 2 to inflict Slow gave me an added advantage, then tagging her with Lightning at the end was the fastest way."

Liza glares at Aiya, though hides it as soon as Ms. Vira looks at her. "... I went with the Scan, because that's how we're supposed to fight." She says flatly. "Once I woke up again and already had Slow, I thought my only chance was just to overwhelm her with firepower... Since inflicting damage is a mage's real job."

Aiya bit her tongue to stop a reply. No, a mage's real job is to defeat enemies, through whatever means necessary, to keep the rest of the party alive. Still, Ms. Vira only looks at them, makes notes on her paper, and dismisses them, and they leave as Aiya tries to ignore the glare she can feel from the girl she just beat. She feels bad for Liza, but at the same time... She did win. She has to worry about her own grade- Which argument held more water with Ms. Vira? Surely, her victory proved her effectiveness, right? This thought keeps spinning around through her mind as she makes her way to lunch.
