I want to see if it's possible to release a seraphim from their sublord pact. Unfortunately, the pacts are made through Lailah, my Prime Lord, but she's not here. As far as I know she's the only one who can break that contract, but I know almost next to nothing about how the Shepard contract works. She's supposed to guide me through that.

[There's a very long pause before her reply comes in, and then it's just:]

are you asking me to help you get a divorce

A divorce? No. A sublord pact isn't like marriage. Lailah and I have multiple sublords, after all.

I have a teammate who once explained polygamy to me in between attempts to concuss me. I'm not sure how polygamous marriage works, but this sounds close. Are you having relationship trouble or something?

It's really not like that at all. [For one thing it's about a katrillion times more complicated] If you don't know of anything that'll work, then that's fine. [it's really not] I'm just looking around at different options.

I didn't say I don't know of anything that would work. If nothing else, if there's a connection of mana between you, I can try to draw it off and attach it to someone else? I've never tried with living things, though, mostly it's just to repair mana pathways in structures. But I want to know why I would be doing this.

In the case that'd be necessary...I guess it would have to happen if I ever started to generate malevolence. Back home if that happened Lailah could just sever the contracts, but I've been here so long...I want to make sure there's something that can save them in case I'm not fit to be their vessel anymore.

[Sorey's heart sinks. Is it just obvious in his face? ...no, he's just being purposefully dense if he thinks that. It must be true, then. He'd just thought he was stressed and it would go away, but if Nightingale can tell just by looking at him...

At least it's not so bad that the seraphim have noticed. They'd come after him in a second if they could feel any malevolence from him.]

[Due to Nightingale's life, she's become somewhat... hyperaware of when people are upset. It was an unfortunate survival tactic for her, since her parents' moods controlled her entire life. She second-guesses herself constantly, but someone being obviously upset has her on edge automatically, even if she isn't conscious of the exact signs herself.]
