Signeg: Running away
Regained: Day 165
Otto, raising a phoenix?
After the date, you reappear on the front doorstep of your house, and quickly open it. You want to get back to your room- do you? Maybe not. You don't want to. But it's the closest thing you have to a safe space. But it's not safe.
Your parents greet you as you walk in- why are they still up? They were waiting for you. You ignore them and push on to your room, throwing the dress you'd been wearing to the floor, and collapsing into your bed. You can hear noise as they follow you, but you don't care. You can't deal with this right now. You target yourself and cast Sleep, and feel the drowsiness take over and your consciousness slip away...
But you're brought back to reality by a sharp pain in your cheek- Your mother is standing over you, and your father in the doorway. Another slap to make sure you're awake, and you jolt upright.
"Stop it-" is all you can manage to say.
"Then don't ignore us when we speak to you." Your mother sounds cold.
"You're home early." Your father does as well- accusatory, too.
"I'm sorry." You immediately say, on reflex- You have to apologize, or else. "It went badly, so I came home, that's all."
You tried to make it sound lighthearted, but you can immediately tell it was the wrong choice. "What did you do?" She asks, looking at you with... that's disappointment, isn't it? You're familiar with that.
"What do you mean, what did I..."
"Why didn't it go well?" She interrupts you, asking harshly. "We raised you better than that. You should know how to make a good impression."
"It went fine, until it was a date." You scoot back from them slightly- Of course, you know they wouldn't hit you. The last strikes only came to wake you up from your spell. That would be wrong- They would never actually abuse you. Even so, with that hand still raised, you can't help but want to put a little bit of distance, but then you feel guilty for even thinking it.
"It was a date from the start, young lady. You were supposed to attract him so he could provide for you."
"Provide- What, am I a child?" You ask, though there's no force or barbs to your words. You already know they basically think of you as one.
But in response, your father simply tosses something at your bed. It's an envelope- You recognize that logo on it. It's a place you applied to for work- and a letter means you got rejected.
"Another one..." Is all you can manage to say.
"Another rejection. We don't intend to coddle you forever, Aiya." Your mother says sharply. "Are you even trying to get one, really?"
"Of course, I am."
"Don't lie to me." She snaps back, and in alarm you go silent- saying a word right now is the worst possible thing you could do.
"We've seen your online history, and we can tell how often you're even looking." Did they get you out of the house just so they could look at your computer? Though... You thought you had been looking frequently. But with this funk you've been in, even your sense of time is completely skewed... Maybe they're right. Has it been that long?
"So if you won't support yourself, all that's left is for you to get married."
"I've told you before, I'm only attracted to girls." You start to protest, but you're cut off again.
"You've told us nothing of the sort." You swear you did- but maybe...? "But your preferences don't matter- We both know it's not that you care about that, you just for some reason only want to be with a Beast Tribe. You were to be our pride, but it's obvious you don't feel a thing for the care and support we've always given you. Then you can at least have a child so you aren't a disappointment."
... So that's it.
"Is that all about me that matters?" You ask.
"You can't be a leech forever, Aiya. This is for your own good."
... No.
"Or did you want to drain our resources forever? You're expensive, and we can't keep taking care of you, especially if you're so ungrateful."
That's not true. They just don't want you. You've finally been so useless they just don't want anything to do with you now.
"I understand." You manage to say. "I'm sorry."
"You don't sound sorr-" Your mother starts to say, and something within you snaps.
You target her and cast Sleep. She falls, and your father starts to take a stance, but you cast Sleep on him as well. Both are slumped over, now, in your room... You've got maybe half an hour.
You move quickly, throwing on some clothes. Your inventory... may not have enough room for everything, so you grab a bag for the extra space, throwing everything in your room in it- Books, shelves, desk, computer, clothes. Once you're just throwing everything in haphazardly, getting it done fast is easy enough, and it only takes about ten minutes. Your father's sleeping body is still blocking the doorway, so you use your last Teleport Stone, reappearing on your front doorstep, and take off into the night. But where can you go?
Yura, of course... No, not this late. She'll know something is wrong. You still don't want her to be worried. You end up running away- You haven't run in a long time, you get winded so quickly, but you keep moving. You have, at most, a twenty-minute head start, and... Well, they'll be mad. Using magic on someone like that is illegal, but they won't report you. You have absolute certainty in that- That would be admitting they weren't ready.
You take a bus to the other side of the city, getting off at the last stop late at night, and it's cold. You can't set up a bed outside, so you find the nearest park bench and lie down with your head on your bag, shivering and resting there until morning.
Morning comes, and you wake up slightly damp from the cold dew. You end up staggering around to the nearest convenience store- You still have a little bit of money. It's enough to buy you some water. You have to plan carefully- What will you say to Yura? You can't tell her about the date. She'd be livid on your behalf. You can't mention much about the fight, either- You don't want her to be upset. So... All you can mention is the rejection. That's a feeble excuse at best, and you know it, but you're irresponsible. You can play that up. You just got mad and left.
The one blessing here is that your family doesn't know where Yura lives. Even you had to dig through your phone to find her address again, but you find it and start walking in that direction. It's a long walk, but you don't have enough left for bus fare or anything, so you don't have a choice.
Still, you can't drop by unannounced. You end up calling her, asking if you can stay with her for a while. She sounds surprised, but agrees. You tell her you'll be there tonight, which has her even more surprised at how sudden it is. But it's okay, she assures you, she'll go home from work early today.
Work. Yura's working- Bright and friendly as she is. Of course she had no problems getting a job. Still, you walk to her house, and by late afternoon, you find yourself standing in front of her door...
It's okay. You can do this. You've rehearsed it, you know what you'll say. Just take a deep breath, and knock.
