It’s strange.

You’re in a weird area- A forest, inside a cave? The light is dim, but you can feel that your party is around you- You, Yura, Araj, and Cove. Cove takes point, walking in front- She’s in full armor, though hers looks quite different than any you’ve ever seen, almost like it’s organic. And as a merwoman, her dark vision makes her best suited for taking the lead. You follow next, staff gripped, ready to start throwing fire at a moment’s notice. Yura follows behind you, cheerful as ever, while Araj walks behind her, bringing up the rear with her companion bear.

All four of you scarcely realize what happened the first time it gets you- There’s merely a flash, the sound of leathery wings, and you’re suddenly back at the entrance to the caves- though behind you there’s nothing but a faint shimmering light. This is the new dungeon that recently appeared, the Dark Dimensions.

The next time, you’re prepared- It’s an enemy, one that can best be described as a winged eyeball, and as soon as you see its gaze turn to you, you find yourself at the entrance once more.

Before you continue in, you discuss with the others. You don’t think it’s an enemy so much as simply a hazard, and you continue in on that assumption.

This time, you spot it coming, and before it spots you, you grab the others and pull them into a dark alcove nearby. Once it’s gone, you keep going, and… it comes again, from another direction, and once again you’re at the start.

Monsters leap out at you sometimes- They’re very, very strong, and between monster attacks, you end up using a ton of items, trying to conserve Yura’s MP as much as you can. Still, you’re underleveled for this place and it shows. The monsters you see, though, are all demons and devil-type monsters- not a single monster from your own dimension. That was rare.

Still, you keep going. No one even thinks of giving up, with Yura and Araj immediately and without hesitation deferring to your instructions. Which you barely give a thought to, as your brain is in overdrive. You begin to map out the area in your head, flawlessly keeping track of it, as well as the movement of the eye monster. It only takes a couple more tries before you’re pulling your party into an alcove to hide before the eye even turns the nearest corner, floating right past you without noticing. You instruct the party easily and quickly, and even figuring out the pattern before the dungeon’s halfway point, quickly hiding in before it returns.

It doesn’t engage you in combat, you explain, so you think it likely is an environmental hazard rather than a monster to be fought. And indeed, you run past it, scurrying behind it, and generally avoiding its gaze so it never knows you’re there, and in the end, make it into the door to the boss room with no trouble.

But you don’t have time to relax, as the boss attacks right away. You scan it- A Gamma Demon, level 37. Weak to Light magic… which no one in your party has. You’ll just make due with what you have. Unfortunately… Yura’s your highest level here, and even after the dungeon’s experience, she’s only level 26. You yourself are only 25, and…. Well, it’s going to be a hard fight, but you have a plan.

The first thing you do is call out orders- Fight defensively. Yura keeps status buffs up on the party, while Araj attacks, and you yourself blow all of your magic in the greatest attacks you can muster. You run out of MP soon, but that’s part of your plan- You quickly toss a potion down at Yura, restoring her own, then only take a potion for yourself once everyone in the party has been topped off. While Cove keeps the monster’s focus, Araj provides steady crippling strikes on the demon with her longbow, while her bear companion hits for heavy damage.

It’s a slow and painful fight- Cove is even killed once, but Yura resurrects her immediately and you use a healing potion on her right away- but you’re victorious in the end, and all of you slump to the ground in exhaustion and relief. You even break out laughing despite yourself, as you notice you finally went up a level.

Yura joins the laughing, grabbing you and Araj in a big hug. “See, Cove, I told you! Aiya’s our genius strategist!”

Yes… Cove’s voice resounds in your head- You’ve gotten used to this now, though. Your tactics and planning were splendid. I must apologize.

“Apologize?” You ask in confusion, smile slipping off.

We merfolk do not have magic, and so it was difficult to trust myself to you, as I do not understand it… This was a mistake. I apologize from my heart’s depths, and place myself in your care, Aiya.

You feel your face begin to heat up. “It’s… Don’t worry about it. I’m just glad you approve, after what happened…”

It was a well-thought strategy. Had the demon not landed a critical hit, we would have suffered no deaths despite the level gap. She looks at you and smiles, and once again you find yourself reminded of just how weirdly beautiful she is. You have my thanks.

You blush, look away, and stammer out something to deny your part- After all, it only worked because everyone else was amazing. You quickly change the subject, after that, grabbing the room’s treasure- a dark sword and a shining staff. Cove and Yura immediately equip them, and you see Cove giving you a strange look from the corner of your eye as you leave….
