Neuneu: Do you have a crush on Yura?
It's summer vacation, and you, Araj, and Yura all agreed to meet up today to go shopping. But even though you agreed to meet at ten, you're agonizing three hours earlier, trying to figure out what to wear. Should it be something cute? But you don't want to draw attention to yourself. But Yura and Araj are both incredibly pretty, and if they're dressed cute, you'll stand out as you don't belong with them... And you know they'll look good no matter what they wear. You look in the mirror, looking at your own reflection with some manner of distaste, spotting so many flaws. No figure at all, no muscle either, too short, awkward posture, the list goes on... After thinking like that for a bit, it's all you can do to not just crawl back into bed and stay there.
But you promised, and you want to see them. It takes you an hour to finally decide, and then you’re already out the door, arriving at the meeting spot- the mall’s central plaza… an hour in advance. You take a moment to be grateful you didn’t wear heels after all, then just… stand around. For an hour. Watching people.
Araj shows up about five minutes early, and you wave at her with relief. She asks if you were waiting long, and you assure her that of course you weren’t, you only just got there yourself. Yura, for her part, comes dashing in right at ten o’clock on the dot, skidding to a halt and grinning up at you.
You spend much of the day just walking around the mall, looking at things. The first stop is a hardware store, full of computer parts, hologram screens, hovering external drives, and things like that. Araj immediately comes to life, bursting with excitement as she checks all of the parts out, but eventually decides not to buy anything this early on. You go to a sporting goods store for Yura next, then an armor store, checking out all of the light armor for Araj, then you and Yura check out the magic equipment store.
It’s like a paradise to you, with spellbooks, robes, staves and rods… The display models have some very fancy robes equipped onto them, a deep red with metallic highlights on the sleeves and hood, and you want it, but that’s well out of even your price range… Still, you eye the staves, and both you and Yura come out with new equipment, which you’re very pleased with- A new robe and staff for each of you, and you got a spellbook as well, containing Quake. A powerful spell, but one that hit enemies and allies alike within its range… You couldn’t wait to try studying it to make it more useful. You end up buying Araj a new bow, as well, some sort of polymer compound bow. She nearly starts crying from joy at it.
At one point, Yura drags you both into a clothing store as well. “Here, try these on!” She shoves clothes at you, and you humor her, though you know nothing looks good on you. Still, Yura and Araj both call you pretty, causing your face to start burning. You must look ridiculous, blushing like this, but you can’t help it…
Still, to cheer you up after that, Yura takes you to look at the hair decorations. You pick up a clip and hold it up to Araj’s bangs. “I think this would look good on you.” You comment. Araj’s bangs are always in her eyes, after all, and that’s such a shame, since she’s so pretty.
“Ah, but what about-”
“Surprise!” Yura interrupts Araj, draping on your back, holding a hairpin in your face. It’s a long one, with a flower design and dangling beads, and overall well-made. “Here, try it!”
“Huh? I, okay…” You’re hesitant, but you do like the look of that pin, and Yura immediately sets to work on your hair, putting it up in a ponytail and placing the pin in it. Of course, as soon as you feel fingers through your hair, you can immediately feel your tension evaporate and you relax entirely, enjoying the feeling.
“Ah, she’s doing that again…” Araj comments bemusedly.
“It’s ‘cause she likes this.” Yura laughs. “It’s like a switch. Here, you try it too.” At Yura’s insistence, Araj ends up playing with your hair as well, and you basically go limp, leaning on Yura to stay up. You end up with your ponytail pinned up to itself, but they seem so proud of it, you can’t bear to take it down, even once they’ve let go. (You do, however, take a moment to be incredibly embarrassed about all of that.)
Eventually, the three of you finally go sit down at the food court to rest for a bit, getting quick junk food, and cold drinks. You talk happily, the anxiety from earlier almost completely forgotten as you get to spend time with them, just glad to be together…
Until Yura gets up to go to the bathroom, leaving you and Araj alone. And Araj is looking at you strangely.
“What’s the matter?” You ask, concerned.
“Aiya…” She looks around, voice even quieter than normal. “Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.” You lower your voice as well and lean in, completely serious.
“You, um…” She trails off, breathing to steady herself as she tries to make herself spit it out- You can recognize the same things you do. “You mentioned before that you’re only interested in girls, right? Is there… Is there someone you like?”
You immediately blush again. You haven’t ever given that sort of thing any thought- You know you have no romantic interest in men, it’s true, but to ask that… You can’t even begin to form a response before Araj continues, even quieter than before.
“Is it Yura?”
You’re left speechless, with your face burning hotter than ever before. “I- It’s… I mean, it’s not like that, she’s just been my friend for a long time…” Your heart is pounding. What you feel for her is just friendship, right? A crush would be… Well, there are a million reasons that would never work. It couldn’t possibly be that.
“Is that so…” She looks down, turning slightly pink herself. “I’m sorry to pry. It’s just that you two get along so well…”
Aha. You manage to stop freaking out as you realize her concerns- She must be worried. If you did have feelings for Yura, and the two of you got together, that would leave her as a third wheel, and she would feel lonely… That must be it. You understand that worry very well.
“It’s all right.” You smile comfortingly. “After all, don’t we get along just as well? You’re both just as important to me.”
Araj doesn’t look up, but she nods. Before you can say anything further on the subject, though, Yura returns, draping her arms over both of you and hugging you close.
For the rest of the day, though, you keep remembering Araj’s words, and stealing glances at Yura whenever you get a chance. She is beautiful, but you don’t feel like that towards her. Your feelings towards Araj are just as strong, after all, so it’s just friendship. Even if it wasn’t… You have to focus on schoolwork more than a relationship right now. Your parents would never allow that relationship to happen anyway. And above everything else… Your mind unbidden recalls all of your flaws from the mirror this morning. Yura is beautiful, outgoing, cheerful, and an all-around amazing person… There’s no way she could ever have romantic feelings towards someone like you.
So it’s just friendship. You’re friends, she’s your best friend, but you’re only friends. Things are fine that way.
Notes:
During the early clothing montage bit, you can see lots of Aiya’s fashion sense, and it’s mostly long drapey shape-hiding stuff. But it’s also all really cute- she has a really cute fashion sense, mori-girl kind of stuff.
The clothes she eventually settled on were this but with full jeans instead of shorts.
Also during the first part in Aiya’s room you could see her whole rather large collection of cute hair clips, scrunchies, basically all sorts of really cute hair accessories.
Also also, there is a sense here that money is just not a thing Aiya has to worry about. She’s very casual about buying things for her friends, even when they’re expensive, though she also recognizes when things are just way out of her price range regardless. She is at least aware she has the most money of her and her friends.
Also also also: If you couldn’t figure it out. Yes, she’s got a goddamn crush on Yura, it’s fucking absurd, but she also honestly believes she does not.
