Wilder the Trickster, crosswords
Your parents will be home late tonight, you know, and they both have busy work. You want to do something nice for them, but what?
The answer comes to you swiftly, of course. You should make them a nice meal! You're still a child, but you can do that much. You use your allowance on the way home from school to buy ingredients, and follow a simple recipe you found online to make a nice dinner. But you're still halfway through making it when your father walks in. You immediately try to hide what you're doing, but... Well, you're using half the kitchen. It doesn't work well.
Your father seems angry- "You don't know how to use these, you could burn down the house"- but you stammer out that you wanted to give them a nice surprise, and he softens. He agrees to let you finish, but only if he supervises, so you feel his gaze on you as you try to work through the rest of it. There's pressure from that, now, as you're extremely determined to not make a single mistake! But your arms are stiff from nerves now that you're being watched.
Even so, you finish making it perfectly, and you can feel pride well up- and with no time to spare, as you hear the front door as well. Your mother's home, so you rush out to set the table right as she walks in.
Once the three of you are seated and begin to eat, you only pick at your food, watching your parents to see their reactions.
"Eat your dinner, Aiya." Your mother says once she notices. "You have to eat everything your father makes for you."
"A- Actually..." You speak up, nervously. "I made this tonight. Do you like it?"
"Hm." She looks down at it, and you can feel a pit form in your stomach at her words. "If you have time to spend on this, it would be better for you to spend that on your studies. Have you done your homework?"
You look down, crushed, but then you're distracted by the sound of metal clanking, like your father is moving around, but you don't see him move at all.
"... But." Your mother says, and you look up again. "I suppose it's good to have a useful hobby, if you like this. And... It's very good. You did well." Your father nods in agreement. Your heart leaps, and you give them the most ridiculously huge smile you've ever worn, delighted to hear their praise.
Notes: Her dad leaves his full plate armor on while supervising and eating. It's ridiculous but there is absolutely no thought of this being abnormal or unusual in the memory.
